Back-to-School Occupational Therapy Screenings (Ages 4+)

As children head back to school, it’s a great time to check in on their development. If you’ve noticed something that makes you wonder, “Is this typical?” an Occupational Therapy screening can help provide answers.

OT screenings are designed to identify potential concerns in areas such as:

  • Gross motor skills (running, jumping, balance, coordination)
  • Fine motor skills (handwriting readiness, cutting, coloring, manipulating small objects)
  • Emotional regulation and coping skills
  • Sensory processing (sensitivity to sounds, textures, movement, or difficulty with self-regulation)

A screening is a brief, low-pressure way to determine whether your child’s skills are developing as expected compared to peers. Following the screening, you’ll receive a written summary of the screening and one of three recommendations:

  • No occupational therapy services are recommended at this time.
  • Continue to monitor development and reassess if concerns persist.
  • A comprehensive OT evaluation is recommended to gather more information and determine if intervention would be beneficial.

Sometimes peace of mind is the best outcome, and sometimes early identification can make all the difference. If you’ve been wondering whether your child could benefit from occupational therapy, a screening is a great first step.
